Yuka App Benefits

Health & Food Product Insights

This week I discovered the Yuka App.  To say it has been a game changer for a lot of my food purchases is an understatement. Let me explain…

My sister follows this inspirational farmer in Ireland on Instagram @portnoomarketgarden and one of the things he is totally passionate about is making sure that you look carefully at what is put into the food that you buy from shops and supermarkets – predominately packaged items.

Be prepared to be shocked to find out that a lot of the products with clever packaging and wording to give the impression that it is healthy, can be utterly misleading.  I have stopped, with immediate effect, eating several so called healthy snacks.

The app allows users to scan the barcode of food items or cosmetics using their smartphone camera. Yuka’s database contains information on a vast number of products, so once you scan a product, the app will quickly identify it.

After scanning, the app provides an overall rating for the product. The rating is typically displayed as a score out of 100, with accompanying color codes (green for good, orange for moderate, and red for poor).

If a product receives a low score, Yuka will often suggest healthier or safer alternatives. This feature helps users make better choices by finding similar products with higher ratings.   The bigger picture to all this is explained in the email I received from one of the founders:

“I hope you’re enjoying the app! Did you know that Yuka is so much more than a product scan? I mean sure, that’s what we do, but it’s not our why. We know that giving consumers info on what’s really in their products, changes their minds and influences purchasing.

The effect? Manufacturers respond and create products that hit higher benchmarks for health.   That’s our why. Making the world healthier one product choice at a time.

We love to see manufacturers responding, and that’s why it’s so important that we remain fully independent. We don’t receive money from brands or manufacturers. We rely on our Yuka community and premium membership to propel our mission forward…”

The power of the individual is great so if you feel as strongly as I do about this then please download the app and help make conscious decisions to better the food industry for one and all!

Rant over… With love and to healthier food choices. Em x
